They littered the earth to a point of ruin prior to their vanishing, leaving behind enough trash and clutter to soil everything for hundreds of years to come. They left behind concrete structures that had been doomed to fall ever since their creations, and vehicles that polluted the air and now dotted the city's streets. Everything they had done to make themselves better - all of it - had been for naught, and the world had come crumbling down around them.
Each and every day, Raiden had to thank the stars that he was free of their clutches. Without the humans having abandoned him, he would never have known that a whole world was right outside his front door. For the first few years of his life, he had been nothing but a house pet. He was groomed, doted on, and stroked on a daily basis. They had fed him bland food and water that tasted as stale as a stagnant puddle. Now, a canine free of their clutches, he had grown used to being without them.
Even without a living human on the earth, the marks they had carved were obvious. Bodies lined Maralyn Beach. Every day, some washed back into the ocean. And every day, more washed back onto the shore. It was disgusting. The great brute couldn't help but snort in disgust as the first few bodies came into view. Even the salty tang of sea salt in the air could not strip the scent of death.
Pawprints followed the Anatolian Shepherd wherever he stepped, trailing after him under the moonlight. It was nearing midnight and the moon was high in the sky, showering the world below with the bluest light it would ever see. The ocean looked eerie at this hour. The water closest to the horizon seemed to be black and everything in the water was a total mystery. Sea serpents could have lurked below the waves and not a single soul would know.
With his head high, Raiden pressed on. He looked for nothing more than a spot free of bodies to spend the evening. The beach was a wonderful! It had quickly grown on him, though the bodies were an obvious turnoff to it. There was nothing that would keep him away - except maybe a storm. With every sense on high alert, he zeroed himself in on a spot up ahead that seemed to be clear. He was confident that he would run into other dogs, though he had not many that could match him in size. His size was all he had in battle, because he sure as hell wasn't fast. The thought of company was never a bad thing to the overly-friendly mutt.
The male sighed as he sat on his haunches, staring out at the ocean. The waves lapped in front of his paws, too close for comfort. But he enjoyed the danger of it. It would only be his luck that a body would head straight for this spot, but maybe it would be a clear night. After all, it had not stormed for quite some time. It was still cool out from the winter that had just fled the earth, but it was lovely. This spring would be most welcomed.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,440,true] | [atrb=background,http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/fizzeh01/Untitled-1_zps6bd51f77.png] The hospital was stifling; it smothered a dog accustomed to open spaces and stars to stare at. A dog like her could hardly breathe in a place like that- even if it was a large building…it still felt claustrophobic to the large wrinkled dog. Still, she had not just abandoned the territory, she had made rounds and told a member of her night excursion, and if she were not back by dawn something had obviously happened to her. What they did with that was up to them but she hoped that they carried enough love and loyalty for her as they had their former leader. The thought of Bailey made the shoulders of the mastiff sag slightly, head following suit. The leader would be missed and it was the dogs only hope that she led them well now that she was the leader, the Heart, of Rhazorn. She had never aspired to be the leader, she had been content as a beta, taking over when Bailey had been away, but never for more than 24 hours, now she was a permanent leader with dogs looking up to her and following her example. She could not fail them.
Dash moved slowly along the beach, eyes ignoring the human bodies, some half decomposed some more whole. She could smell them, the differences in their decomposition levels; she did not need to see the bodies. Large paws dragged forward, pushing through the sand, she left gashes in her wake, tearing the sand and creating large wounds followed by a large paw print to mark who had done it. The black water was not given any attention, she cared not for the monsters lurking in the deep it was the sky her copper eyes found. Searching the stars for an answer while avoiding the bright light of the moon. Would she be a good leader? Would the members accept her issuing a war with Xarthen? How could they not…? Bailey would get her justice. Rhazorn had done nothing to the wolves; this was an act of hostility that was uncalled for. Ptolemy would pay.
In a moment where death was not as strong the mastiff paused, eye flickering in front of her. There was a body on the beach, a dog, and it was most certainly alive. For a moment, interest pushed the mastiff’s ears forward as her head lifted, who would be up at this hour? Who in their right mind would be so close to the water when winter just ended? Dash considered moving closer, but a second wind came and she noted the gender- male. Her jaw clenched and she turned her eyes back to the sandy shore. It seemed to be one of the only places without bodies to disturb her. Sighing, she moved towards the male, not entirely enthusiastic about sharing her free time in the company of the opposite sex, but if it meant not sitting next to a rotting corpse, she would tolerate it…for the time being. Sooner or later she would get irritated or the memories would come back and she would leave.
“Your paws must be numb by now, how are you planning on walking if you can’t feel your feet?” She asked in a rather rough attempt at a light joke. The dog was of a shepherd breed, but he was both larger and heavier than any she had met, still, they were of equal height, it was the weight where he seemed to best her, but then again, she was a female and thus, lighter than males of her breed. She could take him if it came to it, that she was certain of.

His position as an alpha was so new to him that his every waking moment was spent worrying over the pack - would he fail them? Would he lead them to their downfall? He couldn't even begin to imagine the horrors that he would have to overcome should he lead them to trouble.
Just as the pack was fine without him, it would be perfectly fine with him. He was confident in the abilities of the canines that he had grown to love. With the position of beta wavering on a few dogs yet, he was struggling to keep everyone on task. He released a small sigh as the crashing of waves filled his ears - he really needed to get those beta positions filled.
For quite some time, all that filled his nose was the scent of salt that clung to the air and, of course, that disgusting rotting flesh smell that never seemed to leave the shores. Thankfully, no bodies were washing up in front of him. For some reason, however, there was something new in the air. Something strange. But no other canines would be lurking around at this hour, would they? He was sure that he was the only one.
Nose in the air, he perked his ears. Just in time to hear a voice calling out toward him. He wagged his tail at her voice, a wide grin spreading across his maw. Instinctively, he turned to look at her, sand clinging to his fur like pups to their mother's stomach. She was a beauty and, surprisingly enough, managed to match him in size. It was something that always shocked him when he found a dog that actually saw eye-to-eye with him.
"As long as someone as beautiful as yourself is here to talk to, I don't need to be walking anywhere!" |
[/color] He grinned at her once more, totally oblivious to the fact that he was speaking to another alpha. He did not mean to flirt with her, merely to boost her mood. It was in his nature to make everyone around him happy, and most females enjoyed his compliments. Raiden's tail wagged at her, swirling the air around him and filling his nose with the disgusting scent of bodies. Needless to say, it took only moments for him to stop. He padded closer to her, dropping on his haunches only steps away. His ears flopped back against his head as he stared at her, head cocked in curiosity. "Please excuse me for not introducing myself sooner - my name is Raiden! I belong to the Cesavias pack."[/color] It was rather inappropriate to claim that he was alpha, especially to someone he didn't know. He usually tried his hardest not to come off as flashy or conceited. "What might you be doing out here on a night like tonight?"[/color] [/div][/center][/div] Image made by Blackbird! [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,440,true] | [atrb=background,http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/fizzeh01/Untitled-1_zps6bd51f77.png] The male turned at the sound of her voice and as her eyes watched his, she noted that he took a moment to size her up, perhaps he was surprised that she matched him in height, but then again it was probably just the fact that a female was having a midnight walk on the beach alone. Who knew? Not her, nor did she care to figure out why exactly he was surprised. Dash didn’t really want to be in his company, but she enjoyed the stars and the salty air and this was the only place not tainted by a rotting carcass. Wonder if dogs get desperate enough… This wasn’t the first time the thought had crossed her mind as she thought of the corpses that could be found in the city- although mostly bone now, and along the beach where the salt had done a decent job of preserving the flesh…the aquatic life on the other hand…had fed and gorged themselves on the free food.
The male quickly regained himself and let his tail wave behind him, brushing against the sand as well as stirring the air, allowing the putrid smell of decaying bodies to hit her nose, causing it to wrinkle in distaste. When he spoke, her eyes rolled. She was not beautiful; her breed was not made for attraction, but for a more brutish nature. “Right…and what if my intention was not to talk, but to harm you?” Her voice was still rough, lacking the joking nature she had held a moment ago and for a moment she wondered if she wanted to harm the male. After a second thought, she decided she did not want to do that, he seemed jovial and kind enough, he wasn’t a threat to her or her family. It was a good question to point out though, what if she had decided he was a threat? Where would he go with his numb paws then?
Apparently, that answer would be to come closer to her, she watched as he moved closer, only a few feet away from her. Yawning, Dash sat back on her haunches; making it plain that she did not view him as any sort of threat- no he was far too friendly. Even if he did become aggressive, it wasn’t like he would be able to topple her over with ease, she wasn’t that light. He introduced himself as part of the Cesavias pack, Raiden. She nodded; letting her nostrils flare to take in the pack scent she had not paid attention to earlier. This time she would remember and know just in case she crossed paths with his pack mates. “Dash, of Rhazorn.” Just as he had not divulged his rank she did not either. The rank was new to her and she found it pointless to make herself an immediate target for any potential enemies. She was of Rhazorn, but that was all anyone needed to know outside of her pack until she deemed fit.
She smirked at his next question before licking her lips, a small string of drool remaining on either side of her dropping lips. “I’m not used to closed in spaces. Needed to be able to breathe.” She shrugged, no point in lying, there were plenty of buildings still standing and able to house a pack of significant size- even if hers was nearly non-existent at the moment. “What about yourself?” She asked, it was only polite and as her teacher had taught her- manners were always good things to have when making a first impression. Dash expected a similar answer to the one she had given though.
