[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc72/fizzeh01/ifallelsefails/untitled3_zps604bd458.png] He had yet to heal. His paws hurt from his travels. They were still raw and tender, but the wolf was tired of doing nothing. Ptolemy had given him instructions to stay in the den area, but who was he to listen to his foster father? The youth was not rebellious, his foster father frightened him quite a bit and that was why he had remained in the den area for so long. His paws had begun to ache something different though, he could not just lay there any more. A child should not be left in a den, even if hurt, and be expected to behave. His caretaker had fallen asleep and Rhy had taken the chance to sneak out, but that had proven to be a mistake. He was now somewhere, he was no longer within Xarthen borders, he knew that much, the stench of the border was hard to miss. Yet, he didn’t have a clue as to where he was.
Being lost was nothing too worrisome; someone would find him that was not what irked the wolf pup. It was the rain that drizzled down now that he was far away. The dead grass that had only slightly hurt his paws now burned as mud and grit were forced into the crevices of his cracked and torn paw pads. He had found some relief, however, having found a gentle stream in the middle of the clearing, he lay there, sprawled out the way puppies tended to with each paw submerged in the icy water. He had lost feeling long ago, having already succumbed to the cold water, his paws were numb and without much feeling, further putting the pup at risk. How would he run if he could not feel the paws that carried him? He wouldn’t. He would stumble and trip and only hurt himself further.
Huffing softly, the pup lay there, reptilian amber eyes lazily fluttering open, looking out across the field, it was slowly coming to life, now that the snows were gone and the weather was warming up on most days- today was not one of those days. Rhy would be lucky if he did not have a cold on top of his injured paws, but he did not care, he just lay there, waiting for the rain to stop and for his paws to…well… they were still in the water and so really he was just waiting on someone- not Ptolemy- to find him and carry his ass home and back to the den where he could be warm and cared for until he was healed…not that he hadn’t already set that process back by going on this little adventure. Stupid, stupid, stupid. He thought as his eyes closed again. The adventure had cost him more freedom, but perhaps someone would realize that he could not just lay around doing nothing…even if that was exactly what he was doing in the valley.

Ptolemy had gotten some free time from his busy schedule as Alpha and decided to visit Rhy. He'd never admit it, but the little scamp had begun to slowly worm his way into importance. At the very least, the massive brute was interested in the pup. That was enough for him to be exceedingly protective already. If any of his Packmates treated Rhy different than they did him, he'd be angry enough to beat the living shit out of them. Since Ptolemy had adopted the kid, he was considered a Prince of Xarthen. Whether he was the Heir or not would wait to be determined until the white Czar had biological pups of his own though.
Loping toward the den in which Rhy was confined, head high as always, Ptolemy couldn't help but be a bit excited. Pups were the one thing he was actually a bit kind to and it would be fun to teach his foster son how to tussle like a warrior. That lesson was set aside for when the young brute was healed though. He couldn't be taught anything with his paw pads all raw like they were. Ptolemy felt sorry for the child, having to be confined like he was and probably hurting. Soft puppy pads weren't meant for the journeying he'd done.
It took a moment for the bear-like wolf to notice he'd paused while deep in thought. His large form blocked the entrance to Rhy's den although he hadn't even come close to entering yet. With a brief shake of the head to clear it, Ptolemy poked his nose in to find the den empty. Blinking a few times, a frown crumpled the Czar's brow for a moment. He looked at the guard to find him asleep and gave a booming snarl. This sent the idiot to his paws, cowering and whining pitifully.
"Nicias, where is my son?"
Voice demanding, Ptolemy turned his body toward the smaller Red wolf, voice a rumbling growl. This made the other press closer to the ground, shaking like a leaf and tail between his legs. He spluttered unintelligible words, irritating the Alpha male further.
"For goodness sake, spit it out, you useless scoundrel!"
The white Czar's voice boomed, laced thickly with anger. His bright yellow eyes narrowed on Nicias and he shrugged, unable to speak. He knew all too well that his punishment would be harsh for this and it scared him into speechlessness. When Ptolemy rammed into the red brute and nipped his shoulder roughly, he squealed but otherwise took the rough treatment with complete submission and humility.
Having had enough with dealing with Nicias, Ptolemy shouldered past him roughly and stalked off to find Rhy. Nose close to the ground, his ears pricked when he caught the scent trail of his adopted son. The burly white wolf bounded after the smell and soon found himself venturing out of the Kingdom of Xarthen. An angry growl erupted when he noted that he was close.
Rhy, you idiot!
His thoughts raced as his intense yellow gaze raked the barren valley carefully. It was then that he caught the familiar sight of a brown Timber wolf pup. Glaring at the distant figure, he strode over briskly, not bothering to mute the crunch of grass underpaw. In his anger, Ptolemy's tail rose, something he did out of habit since he was usually trying to show dominance when angry.
Once he arrived at his son's side, the Czar reached over to give Rhy a sharp nip on the hindquarters. His eyes were like lightning as he simply stared at the pup in pure anger for a long moment. The large brute's breathing was rough, mostly from his fury. What had the foolish pup been thinking, suddenly wandering off on his own? Did he not know how many enemies his Pack- no, his father had that would jump at the chance to kill a possible heir to Xarthen? Although he wasn't sure they'd exactly be cruel enough to kill an innocent pup, he knew they'd at least steal him. The results wouldn't be pretty. It was then that he finally let loose a thundering growl and began to yell.
"Are you crazy, Rhy?! Didn't I tell you to stay in your den? I come to play with you a bit and find you gone....do you have any idea what could have happened to you if it hadn't been me that'd found you?! Also, because of you being hare-brained, Nicias will receive a beating once we get back. For God's sake, think, pup! Do you know how much you had me worried??? I'd thought those dog-scum had gotten you!"

Rhy even lifted his head to see who exactly was walking through the field. The bear-esque figure of Ptolemy had dread running through his body, settling deep in the pit of his stomach. The young escapee tasted bile on his tongue as his throat tightened. uh-oh… Still, he made no attempt to get up and at least act like he felt bad for wandering off. Even if he had opened some of the wounds on his paws, it felt good to stretch his legs and move around.
Rhy remained how he was, body angled, but still sprawled out, but his head and ears were pointed towards the wolf that approached him, his jaws parted to allow his tongue to loll out to one side, giving him a rather off center- clown like appearance. Oh he knew he was in trouble, one could tell by the way his head lowered and ears fell back once Ptolemy stood in front of him. This troubled look was made all the more ridiculous by the fact his lips were pulled back in a sheepish smile while his tongue continued to loll to one side.
Neither wolf said a word; Rhy was not about to test his adopted father’s patience further. Instead, Rhy counted the seconds measured by his racing heartbeat until the words came out…in an angry snarling yell. The youngster cringed as he listened, his eyes visibly narrowing as his body tensed, but he did not cower in front of the alpha and it was not out of disrespect, more so caused by the fact it was near impossible with the way he was laying. The best he could do was to nearly let his head hit the ground, but he did not want to appear lazy so he remained at an awkward angle, tongue lolling and barely touching the ground while the rest of him began to shake with the effort it took to hold himself in such position.
It came as a surprise how much the Xarthen alpha had taken to him; he had heard Ptolemy calling him a son, even though he was not of his blood. The pup had not been within the pack for long and yet there was evident concern in the tone and words that the alpha yelled at him. It was for that reason that his jaws clacked shut, careful not to bite his tongue, there was no shame or regret on the expression of Rhy, he was not sorry for running off, but he was sorry that he had missed the chance to play. Wandering was fun and exciting but bonding with Ptolemy over a good game would have been much more entertaining to the youngster.
It took a good, long minute for the Prince to reply to his foster father. “You shouldn’t punish Nicias, it took him forever to fall asleep.” It was not likely what Ptolemy would have wanted to hear out of the boy’s mouth, but that was what he got. Nicias did not deserve a beating when it had been Rhy who had done the rule breaking. Shaking his head, the pup rocked himself into a more comfortable position, curling his numb paws up against him, except one fore leg, which stretched out in front of him to keep him upright. “What would anyone do with a pup?” He asked, although he was sure he did not want to know he could not help but ask. What made the alpha so worried? He hadn’t gone far outside of the Xarthen kingdom…had he? He hadn’t thought so, but then again, he hadn’t been paying too much attention either.

The white wolf didn't like the sheepish smile Rhy gave him and glared harder at the young Timber pup. Only once it was dropped did he sigh and sit on his haunches with a stern look on his face. Although he didn't like the little Prince cowering at his paws like some dog he'd just scared, he needed to learn a lesson and seeing as he was his father now, it was his responsibility to teach him that lesson.
It had almost been expected for the child to stick up for his guard. That irritated the white Czar further though. Canting his ears back, eyes bright with annoyance, he let out another booming growl. Although his long white fangs poked out of his maw, Ptolemy didn't move to use them, not on his pup. All he wanted right now was to bring him home to safety and tear that Nicias to shreds.
"Rhy, he blatantly disobeyed my orders to watch over you by falling asleep. That in itself is reason enough for me to skin him and leave him to the crows. You shouldn't worry so much about him as you should yourself. Just because you aren't mine biologically doesn't mean you don't reflect me any less. As a Prince, you have a duty to grow up as an example for your Packmates. Since you have made me worry and put yourself into danger, you will not go unpunished. That will wait until we are home though."
The large brute's ears popped back up when he heard his pup's question. His fangs slipped back behind his lips, yellow eyes darkening. Just the thought of the answer to his question made Ptolemy's muscles tense, yearning to kill something. If Rhy ever found out the answer personally, the Czar would personally make sure the whole pack of flea infested vermin that did it would pay ten fold.
"Several things could happen. A loner could kill you, some fox, coyote or other wild canine could severely hurt you and leave you to the crows, or a rival Pack could steal you to get back at me. Now that you know, that should be reason enough for you to never do this again."
Ptolemy's tone was dark. He would go crazy if any of that ever happened to Rhy. After all, what was his was untouchable to others. If that commonly known rule was broken, there were grave consequences. Many, even rogues and loners alike, knew how possessive the white alpha male was. They knew he'd do anything to protect his things, and that was both a scary thought and an opportunity in their minds. He gazed down at the pup with a deathly serious look.
"You will never do this again, am I understood?"
Rhy needed to know how badly this could not only affect him and Ptolemy, but their pack as well. Wandering out of the territory was not only stupid, but suicidal for a young Prince or Princess of Xarthen. Ptolemy did frighten the pup, but then again there were many wolves- some even in the pack that feared the czar and his harsh, possessive ways. Ptolemy wanted things done a certain way and when they weren’t he exploded in anger and rage, punishing all responsible…except of course, this time. Rhy was the one who escaped- not Nicias. He would persuade his adopted father to spare the wolf; it hadn’t been his fault-even if he had fallen asleep. Guarding a sleeping pup was boring work, boring and tiring.
His words defending the babysitter only seemed to anger his adopted father as another thunderous growl rolled through the air. The pup flinched at the sound, only to look skyward. It was still raining a slow, dull drizzle. Shaking his head, letting some of the droplets splatter in different directions while causing his fur to become spiked out. He sighed, listening to the lecture, not so much as flicking an ear in worry at the thought of himself being punished. He had never been punished by his parents…not that he could remember…but his punishment couldn’t be too bad he couldn’t even walk.
“So…it’s his fault he was given a boring job? Ptolemy…I fell asleep, he fell asleep. I woke up, and snuck by before he could wake up. He probably thought I was still asleep.” The pup gave a weak shrug, he really had no other excuse for Nicias, even injured Rhy was still a quiet little thing and he could have snuck by undetected. He had been gone for a while though…had he not been checked up on properly? Rhy had been given the Prince speech before and even coming from a mouth different from his fathers it was still dry and annoying to him. Rhy never asked to be a Prince; he just wanted to be like everyone else.
The question about what could happen to him seemed to soften the czar, causing his ears to sit erect atop his head and his teeth to hide once more behind white lips. The amber- yellow eyes of his adopted father seemed to darken in mood as he thought and this sent nervous apprehension worming through the pup. Nothing could be that bad. The czar gave several possibilities and he listened, ignoring the idea of anything killing him- he had survived a difficult journey without so much as a predator stalking him, he obviously did not smell appealing or seemed worth the energy for a quick bite. A rival pack stealing him interested him; he was not Ptolemy’s blood, so why would they assume he cared about little ole Rhy? Still, the seriousness of the Czar’s tone kept him from shrugging it off as nothing.
A rather uncontrollable shiver went through the pup from the chill of the water and the chill of the wind on his already wet coat. His teeth clacked together in irritation and he once more shook his head. He did not like being cold and wet. Finishing the stern lecture, Rhy nodded. “Understood.” He really just wanted to the lecture to be over and done with. His paws were getting their feeling back and with it came a sharp, stinging pain in his paws, causing him to wince and grit his teeth.
